OUR PROGRAMS

The Great Lakes Boat Building School is a licensed proprietary school in the state of Michigan, with a core offering of a two-year certificate program designed for students interested in pursuing a career in the boat building and restoration industries. Students can opt for a one-year certificate as well.

For those students wishing to further their educations, there are also programs available to earn an Associate's degree and a Bachelors' degree.

Every summer, there is an extensive Workshop Program in Boat Building offered along with Artisan Classes for special interests and pleasure.

    At the core of The Great Lakes Boat Building School’s program offerings is the two-year Career Boat Building Program. It is carefully designed to give our students a broad course of study in the methods and materials required to prepare them for employment in today's modern boat building shops.   • COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM

    Students optionally enrolled in the one-year Comprehensive program will learn the woodworking skills required to build vessels in the traditional carvel and lapstrake methods. They will also work with the modern techniques and materials used in the construction of wood/epoxy composite craft. The programs three individual sessions include:

  • SUMMER WORKSHOPS

    A wide variety of workshops are offered each summer to suit all ages and abilities. These range from Chesapeake Light Craft boat building kits, to hand tool making and woodworking, marine photography, marine finishing, metal casting, and making Shaker boxes. The workshops are divided into two general categories:

PARTNER SCHOOLS

North Central Michigan College

GLBBS students can also credits earned in the One-Year Comprehensive Wooden Boat Building program towards an Associates of Applied Science degree program from North Central Michigan College.

Various NCMC Applied Science programs include 3D Design, Business Math, Engineering Graphics, Interpersonal Communication, Introduction to Marketing, and CAD.

GLBBS students can also apply credits earned in the One-Year Comprehensive Wooden Boat Building program towards an Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Technology from Eastern Michigan University.

This should particularly have appeal for GLBBS students who are thinking about continuing on into naval architecture and design careers.
