Past Boat Projects

Challenge Mountain 20 Overview

The Challenge Mountain 20 is a one-of-a-kind adaptive sailboat that can be sailed with joystick control as well as with a sip/puff system for steering and sail trim.

The Challenge Mountain 20 was a collaborative effort by Challenge Mountain, the Boyne City Yacht Club, the Great Lakes Boatbuilding School, Tiara Yachts, and Irish Boat Shop to design and build a boat that could be easily sailed by sailors with special needs. The boat was designed by Ken Workinger of Tiara Yachts, and GLBBS built the hull.  Irish Boatshop painted and rigged it, and installed the adaptive equipment needed by the respective sailors.

Nina Overview

John Atkin calls this boat, Nina, and describes her as "a most practical and useful type of boat, despite her modest dimensions... from her flat bottom to the tip of her un-stayed mast, shes very much a little ship".  He goes on to say that Nina is an excellent to craft to learn to sail in.

Tanja Overview

A Big Little Utility Boat

John Atkin calls this boat Tanja and describes his design as "a very big little motor boat and is a good example of a husky and well constructed hull".  He goes on to say that "she is not a fancy craft but has the air of business and an understanding of the sea in its rougher moods, and not too much fear of a lee shore, or a landing float without a rubber buffer fender."

Wittholz Dinghy Overview

A very beamy, lightweight, nicely lined, 11' catboat.  This boat was featured in WoodenBoat magazines's 2012 Small Boats special edition.

Yankee Tender Overview

A very traditionally built, roomy, seaworthy, flat-bottom,  lapstrake rowing skiff.  A set of handmade oars is included.

Zimmer Electric Utility Launch Overview

This unique, electric-powered launch is beautifully built with exquisite woods.  The complete propulsion system, with a 3 HP electric motor, controller and chargers, was furnished by ELCO (Electric Boat Company).   This was one of the featured boats in WoodenBoat magazine’s 2010 edition of "Small Boats", in an impressive article with great pictures and details.

Final paint and varnish were finished by Cedar Ridge Boat Works in Cedarville.
